If for some reason you missed all the excitement that is the 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo’s Media Briefings, here’s a quick, no bullshit recap of all of the major media briefings; which will be updated as each conference happens.


Microsoft E3 2014 Media Briefing – “Xbox: Game On”

Missed details for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Forza (5 & H2), and Evolve; will update ASAP.

  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – X1 timed-exclusive DLC, celebrity voices

  • Fable Legends – David Eckelberry on stage to show off the game. Multiplayer Beta this fall. 4-player Co-op VS 1-player as villain gameplay. Gameplay changed to third-person over-the-shoulder action, even for magic use (unlike the “targeting” that old fables used for magic/ranged). You can be the villain, controlling the world like a RTS.
  • Project Spark – Xbox’s LittleBigPlanet w/ a world-builder, and infinite possibilities for game modes, Conker cameo
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection – Releasing November 11, includes Halo 1-4. Cross-game features. Halo 2 getting 10yr Anniversary remake + original Halo 2. Multiplayer gameplay demo’d. Over 100 multiplayer maps, all the maps from H1-4, all on original engines, at 1080p @ 60fps, with 4,000 gamerscore achievements, “on dedicated servers.” Includes Halo Nightfall, the live-action Ridley Scott series.

Electronic Arts E3 2014 Media Briefing

  • Star Wars Battlefront – DICE goes back to the LucasFilm Archives to capture the original feel and details, capturing the planets by going to original filming locations, early in-engine footage interspersed, “see more in Spring 2015”
  • Andrew Wilson, CEO on-stage, talking about how the presentation will go… starting with…
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition – in-engine trailer with music performed on stage by a live cellist, Aaryn Flynn: “all the feels!,” in-engine gameplay demo, changes to core combat mechanics shows a perceived real-time third-person action format (similar to Skyrim?), classic BioWare tactical combat is also still available for those that prefer it. Scripted in-engine cutscene/trailer showing cast & story synopsis. Releases October 7th, 2014.
  • Bioware interstitial w/ developers discussing their creative and development process, interspersed with “concept” footage. Bioware Montreal is working on the next Mass Effect, Bioware Austin is working on a new IP.
  • The Sims 4 – showing off in-engine features, updates to character creation, traits, moods, behaviors, etc. New “gallery” to download/import new sims/properties from other players. Releases September 2nd, 2014. Scripted in-engine trailer.
  • EA Sports UFC – starts with some footage of Bruce Lee, then moves into a documentary-style trailer for the game, interspersed with gameplay and athletes talking about the history of fighting, UFC, and Bruce Lee. In-engine gameplay demo showing a fight between Bruce Lee and BJ Penn. Releases June 17, 2014.
  • EA Sports NHL 15 – “Physics on all 12 players and the puck.” “Most detailed arenas we’ve ever built.” First in-engine look @ NHL 15 trailer.
  • Patrick Souderland – EVP @ EA Studios talking about production and creativity at their studios with new technologies. Introducing Criterion Games for their next game; moving away from cars for the first time

  • Dawngate – MOBA game from Waystone Games. Showing off in-engine gameplay, interspersed with developer discussions about the creative and production processes.
  • Mirror’s Edge – Discussion of Faith’s design and the creative production of the game. Interspersed with concept prototypes, concept art, production modeling, etc. Freerunners helped out in the movement variations, etc.
  • EA Sports FIFA 15 – Scripted trailer showing in-engine gameplay and new features to the game and engine as a whole. “Ball physics” provide “astonishing trajectories.” “You will feel the game.” Trailer with live-action footage of football (soccer) fans at matches then moves into scripted in-engine gameplay to show off everything, narrated by Idris Elba. “FIFA 15. Feel the game.”
  • Battlefield: Hardline – in-engine trailer, the same one that was leaked / released earlier. More of a “TV crime drama.” In-engine gameplay match of 32 players, cops vs criminals in a heist map. Improved environment destruction, more weapons, more tools (grappling hooks), more vehicles (civilian & law enforcement), same Battlefield style gameplay. “Hell yea! Delicious donuts spotted!” Beta of BF:Hardline launches today, on PC & PS4, first-come-first-serve. Download & launch from BF4’s Live Tiles on PS4 while it’s still available, it will be removed. (Update – removed already?)

Ubisoft E3 2014 Media Briefing

  • Far Cry 4 – Scripted in-engine cutscene. November 18th, 2014.
  • Aisha Tyler on stage to host Ubisoft’s conference.
  • Just Dance 2015 – New tracklist. “Community Remix” to rate other player’s performance. Releases in October.
  • Just Dance Now – Mobile App to play/start a Just Dance flash mob.
  • The Division – Scripted in-engine cutscene introducing the story synopsis. Releases 2015.
  • The Crew – Highly edited in-engine gameplay trailer showing off the “coast-to-coast” full map of the USA as playable. PC Closed beta starts July 23rd, beta signups available now. Releases November 11th, 2014 for X1, PS4, PC.
  • Assassin’s Creed Unity – CGI trailer showing off 18th century French Revolution. Releases October 28th, 2014. Scripted in-engine cutscene transition to in-engine gameplay demo. Massive amounts of NPCs making up the crowds. The open-world seems to have been greatly expanded. Map icons are shown in-world without needing to go to the map to locate things.
  • Shape Up – Partnership w/ Microsoft, exclusive to X1. Fitness game that makes use of various mini-games to encourage working out.
  • Valiant Hearts: The Great War – A puzzle adventure game taking place during World War 1, highly artistic style. Introductory trailer with narrative and in-game art style. Launches June 25, 2014.
  • Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot on stage to show off a new game.
  • Rainbow Six: Siege – 5v5 Multiplayer matches, with attackers able to plan their entry. Environment destruction, shoot/destroy walls, floors, etc.
  • Destiny opens the conference with a brand new trailer. Narrative / explanation trailer setting the game. Sounds like it’s narrated by Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister).
    • First on PlayStation.
    • Beta starts next month.
    • Destiny First Look Alpha this thursday for PS4.
    • Destiny PS4 Bundle (white PS4, 500gb, white controller, 30days of PS+).
  • The Order 1886 – scripted in-engine gameplay demo, guy encounters some sort of zombie-thing that turns into some sort of monster?
  • Entwined – some sort of artistic game by recent graduates. Available now on PS4.
  • Infamous Second Son DLC – in-engine story trailer for DLC “Infamous First Light”
  • LittleBigPlanet 3 – in-engine gameplay demo showing off the new changes to the engine. stage depth, new physics, 3 new characters with different abilities and stats. In-engine gameplay trailer showing off a recap of everything we just saw, and more. Launches November 2014.
  • Shuhei Yoshida (President of Worldwide Studios) on stage, to debut a new IP from one of Sony’s studios.
  • Bloodborne – developed by From Software, new fantasy horror game, looks in-engine, but could also be CGI. No indication of gameplay. Releases 2015.
  • Far Cry 4 – “Kyrat” is the location, somewhere in/near the Himalayas. Scripted in-engine gameplay demo, as expected. Still shows off what looks to be a vast open-world like previous games in the franchise. Multiplayer co-op shown, along with a mini-chopper vehicle. Weaponized elephants. Owners of the game can invite non-owners of the game to join them in-game for free.
  • Dead Island 2 – Looks like an in-engine gameplay demo showing off a new zombie title of some sort, with a comedy take on it all, though it could’ve been CG.
  • The Last of Us – Coming to PS4 this year.
  • Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition – implementing Last of Us mobs
  • Talked about a few games, couldn’t catch all the titles mentioned.
  • Battlefield Hardline gameplay trailer shown off, similar to the one shown earlier in the day.
  • Disney Infinity – Marvel heroes joined the battles.
  • Destiny – New content exclusive to PS4
  • Magicka 2: Learn to Spell Again – Paradox Interactive, coming to PS4
  • Grim Fandango – remastered, exclusive to PS4 & Vita
  • Montage of a crapton of games – Broforce, Hotline Miami 2, Titan Souls, Not A Hero, The Talos Principle, and a few others… went by pretty fast, sorry.
  • Let It Die – hybrid live-action & in-engine gameplay trailer of a hyper violent new game by Suda 51, exclusive to PS4 in 2015.
  • Abzu – highly artistic platformer by the guys from Journey
  • No Man’s Sky – In-engine gameplay demo shows planet-to-space transitions in this FPS / space-fighter, and space-to-surface re-entry. “Procedural universe.” Every player starts on a new planet. Color contrast is very extreme.
  • PlayStation Camera – “Optional” but phenomenal reception. Project Morpheus discussed and will be on the show floor.
  • New SCEA president/CEO talking numbers about PSN metrics. YouTube uploads coming to PS4. Spectating is uber popular. Can help or harm whomever you’re spectating.
  • The Playroom – New mini-games coming to this augmented reality game.
  • Free-to-Play – More than 25 games coming this year. Trailers for Planetside 2, War Thunder, Sing Sing Monsters, and other titles that I missed…
  • PlayStation Now – open beta on PS4 on July 31st. PS3 & Vita shortly after. Coming to select Sony TVs if you don’t have a PS3/4/Vita, just get a DualShock 4.
  • PlayStation TV – $99, $139 bundle w/ DualShock 3, Vita memory card, Lego Movie video game.
  • Mortal Kombat X – world gameplay premiere, pretty standard MK gameplay, new characters, new fatalities, etc.
  • Exclusive original content for PlayStation TV – “Powers” – a super-hero style TV show, with the authenticity of a dude from Marvel. Available in the US in December. All PSN users get the show’s first episode for free.
  • PS+ changes – + subscribers get the entire Powers series for free. Ratchet & Clank film trailer.
  • The Last of Us Remastered – PS4 gameplay trailer; looks better, but it’s still the same game.
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – in-engine trailer, same one that was leaked the night before.
  • Grand Theft Auto V – PS4 version confirmed, Fall 2014. PS3 owners can transfer their GTA Online profiles to PS4.
  • Batman: Arkham Knight – in-engine gameplay demo, batmobile shown off, can transform into a fucking tank. Batman can launch out of the batmobile and fly a good distance. “Scarecrow Nightmare” missions only available on PlayStation.
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – “captured on PS4,” looks pre-rendered though.

  • Nintendo’s Pre-Digital Event Countdown playing “Seeya” by Deadmau5. Deadmau5 confirmed for Sm4sh?
