E3 2013 – Media Briefings Recap


Updated June 11, 2013 – Now includes the Nintendo Direct

If for some reason you missed all the excitement that is the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo’s Media Briefings, here’s a quick recap of all of the major media briefings; including Nintendo Direct from this morning.

Key Information

  • New model of Xbox 360 available starting today.
  • Xbox One launches November 2013 for $499 & £499. Euros will pay more based on currency conversion.
  • Xbox Live Gold rolls over onto Xbox One, no need to start a new subscription for Xbox One.
  • Xbox Live Gold will now offer 2 free games per month to subscribers, similar to PlayStation Plus.
  • Microsoft Points are eliminated, using local real-world currencies instead. American Dollars, Euros, Yen, etc.
  • Most of the games shown “take advantage” of Xbox Live’s “cloud computing,” which in turn requires an always-on connection.
  • “Upload Studio” automatically records ALL of your gameplay (without your consent), but lets you chose what to upload (with your consent).
  • Xbox Live utilizes Twitch.TV for live broadcasting of gameplay. PlayStation 4 uses Ustream.TV. The Broadcast Wars have begun.

GameShowcase

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain gameplay trailer. Lots of character introductions. Kiefer Sutherland does justice to Snake’s voice, but it’s still not David Hayter.
  • Wargaming.net’s World of Tanks coming to Xbox 360.
  • Indie developer Press Play trailer’s “Max: The Curse of the Brotherhood” for Xbox 360.
  • Dark Souls II for Xbox One gameplay trailered.
  • Ryse: Son of Rome cinematic trailer and gameplay demo for Xbox One, available at Xbox One’s launch. Quicktime events litter the gameplay.
  • Rare’s long-thought-dead fighting franchise Killer Instinct makes a comeback on Xbox One.
  • Insomniac’s Sunset Overdrive for Xbox One, a cartoon-ish over-the-top shooter.
  • Forza Motorsport 5 demoed on stage, along with an actual McLaren P1.
  • Minecraft: Xbox One Edition debuted. Pretty much the same thing. Congrats, you’re buying the same game again.
  • Remedy’s Quantum Break “gameplay demo” shown. Completely scripted events, but it was in-engine.
  • D4 trailer shown, looks like it could be a sequel to the film adaptation of A Scanner Darkly.
  • Project Spark gameplay demo. Seems like Microsoft’s answer to Little Big Planet. In-game world building and scripting.
  • Crimson Dragon, a spiritual successor to Panzer Dragoon gameplay trailer shown, without audio thanks to MS’s audio problems.
  • Capcom Vancouver debut’s Dead Rising 3 with a gameplay demo. Open-world gameplay, Last of Us style weapon customization, smartglass integration.
  • CD Projekt RED shows first gameplay trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
  • EA’s DICE gameplay demos Battlefield 4 “at 60 fps.” Timed-exclusive DLC to Xbox One.
  • Below“, an artistic 2d platformer for Xbox One, from an indie developer.
  • Black Tusk Studios debut their engine running on Xbox One, they really like fireworks it seems.
  • Halo for Xbox One. Trailer looked like Journey from PS3. While titled “Halo” in the trailer, title may change later.
  • Respawn Entertainment’s TitanFall debuted. Trailer and gameplay demo. Looks like sci-fi Call of Duty.
  • Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare. Gameplay demo, third person action shooter tower defense.
  • Peggle 2 announced. That’s about it. No dates, no gameplay, nothing else.
  • TitanFall discussed via “developer diary” w/ gameplay trailer.
  • Star Wars Battlefront III on the Frostbite Engine, teaser trailer.
  • Need For Speed Rivals gameplay demo, singleplayer becomes multiplayer.
  • Need For Speed feature film first look with star Aaron Paul (Jesse, Breaking Bad), dated September 2014.
  • Dragon Age Inquisition, “The Fires Above” trailer shown, dated Fall 2014.
  • NBA Live 14, powered by EA Sports Ignite, along with “bounceTek”. Intro’d by some beat poet.
  • NFL Madden 25, powered by EA Sports Ignite. Gameplay trailer.
  • FIFA 14, powered by EA Sports Ignite, gameplay trailer.
  • EA UFC, powered by EA Sports Ignite, launches Spring 2014. Intro’d by UFC’s Bruce Buffer & Dana White. Hype trailer.
  • Battlefield 4. Commander mode reintroduced. Battlelog upgraded, uses mobile devices now. Live 64 player multiplayer match.
  • Mirror’s Edge 2 announced, gameplay trailer.
  • Rocksmith 2014 edition with Jerry Cantrell.
  • Splinter Cell Blacklist story & gameplay trailer.
  • Rayman Legends cinematic & gameplay trailer.
  • The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot cinematic trailer. Build your own dungeons, Diablo 3 style gameplay.
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth trailer. Coming this holiday season.
  • The Crew cinematic trailer. Need For Speed style illegal street racing. Gameplay trailer. “Open world” gameplay, the whole entirety of the United States.
  • Watch_Dogs cinematic trailer. No gameplay or release date.
  • Just Dance 2014 gameplay trailer, release dated for Holiday 2013.
  • Rabbids Invasion, an “interactive” TV show on Nickelodeon.
  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag cinematic trailer. Gameplay trailer.
  • Trials Fusion & Trials Frontier, two new games in the Trials franchise.
  • The Division from Massive Entertainment, an “open world, online RPG.” Story trailer, gameplay trailer.

PlayStation 4 – Key Information

  • $399 launch, €399, £349, launches Holiday 2013
  • PlayStation 4 hardware debuted. 2nd coming of the PS2.
  • Disk based games – Not blocking used games on PS4. Trade-ins, lend to friends, re-sell, or keep it.
  • No always-on connection requirements or 24-hour check-in.
  • Multiplayer now requires PlayStation Plus membership. Less than $5/month.
  • Gaikai launching on PS3 first, PS4 and Vita later. PS3 games at launch.
  • Background downloads, livestream via Ustream, friends list based on real friends
  • 140 PS4 games in dev, 100 first year, 40 exclusives

PlayStation Network – Media Services

  • Sony Pictures Entertainment & Sony Entertainment provides exclusive content to PS4.
  • Redbox & Flixster join the video apps for PS4.
  • Music Unlimited – 20million songs, available at launch on multiple devices.
